Nature > sudhirpv  > Nature > Natural Kerala
In this gallery, I added pictures of everyday natural subjects taken in my home state, Kerala. The state of Kerala has the Western Ghats on the East and the Arabian Sea on the west. Many types of forests cover the Western Ghats/Sahyadiri which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered a ecological hotspot due to its biodiversity. The forests in these mountains are under multiple threats due to population pressures ( Kerala has close to 900 people/Sq. Km!) and commercial interests. Almost all the rivers flowing from these forests are dammed for electricity & irrigation projects, submerging precious forests and disturbing the river's ecosystem. Plantation crops like Rubber, Cardamom, Tea etc. cover many developed areas, reducing the biodiversity and fragmenting the forests.

Most of the photographs in this gallery were taken in Palakkad, Kollam & Trivandrum districts. I am not a trained naturalist so most identifications are based on field experience supplemented by books & online information. Please let me know if anything is incorrect. I hope you enjoy these pictures and comments are most welcome!

Polydamas Swallowtail Caterpillar
 (Battus polydamas)

@Palakkad, Kerala
They prefer the Pipevine family of plants in larval stage. Pipevine has toxins which make them poisonous and thus unpalatable to most predators. The Monarch butterfly in North America uses the same defense mechanism.
White Plumeria~Frangipani~Arali~Champa

Now commonly found in India, Plumeria or Frangipani is originally from the Central/South Americas.
Marble Climber or Lollipop vine
palmatus diplocyclos

I found this climber on a fence in Palakkad, Kerala. The marble-sized fruits turn from green to this bright red. They belong to the same family as cucumbers and they do look like tiny spherical red cukes!
Crimson Rose
(Atrophaneura hector)

Roses are one of the easier ones to ID - they have bright red bodies! They are generally common but I find them difficult to photograph as they rarely sit for more than a moment. So I was delighted to find this one which was still, bu it did not open its wings for a full ventral shot. Oh well..
Crimson Rose
(Atrophaneura hector)

This one opened fully, but was way up in the Mango tree..
Plain Tiger Butterfly on a Common Floss bush

Near Chittur River, Palakkad
Rajanigandha/ Mexican Tuberose
Polanthes tuberosa

Again, I never knew that this plant came from the North America!
Zebra Blue Butterfly
 (Leptotes plinius)
Dark-branded Bushbrown
(Mycalesis mineus)
Dry Season Form
